November Site Focus: Choosing Gratitude

November is Native American Heritage Month, and Stilwell Middle School is celebrating the rich culture, heritage, and traditions that help shape our school and community.

As part of our districtwide “Rooted in Purpose” initiative, Stilwell Middle School continues to embrace our site theme, “Rooted in Identity,” while highlighting November's monthly focus, “Choosing Gratitude.”

This month provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the importance of their cultural identity, appreciate the people who influence their lives, and recognize how gratitude can strengthen relationships and create a greater sense of belonging.

Honoring Our Heritage Through Ribbon Shirts and Skirts

For our November website banner, Stilwell Middle School selected flowing satin ribbons inspired by traditional Native American ribbon shirts and ribbon skirts as a visual representation of our cultural heritage.

Ribbon shirts and skirts hold cultural significance in many Native American communities, including Cherokee communities. Often worn during celebrations, ceremonies, gatherings, and other meaningful occasions, these garments can represent cultural pride, identity, personal expression, and connections to family and community.

The colorful ribbons featured in our banner complement our Stilwell Indian mascot and serve as a reminder of the traditions that continue to connect generations.

While ribbon shirts and skirts may carry different meanings for different individuals and families, they share an important connection to the celebration and expression of cultural identity.

This symbolism reflects our middle school theme, “Rooted in Identity.”

Our identity is shaped by more than where we come from. It is influenced by our families, traditions, experiences, relationships, and the values we choose to carry forward.

By honoring our heritage, we encourage students to take pride in who they are while developing respect and appreciation for the identities and experiences of others.

Choosing Gratitude: Recognizing What Matters Most

Our November site focus, “Choosing Gratitude,” encourages students to slow down and recognize the people, opportunities, and experiences that positively impact their lives.

Middle school is an important time of personal growth and self-discovery. Students are developing their identities, building friendships, navigating challenges, and learning how their choices influence the world around them.

During this stage of life, it can be easy to focus on what we do not have, what we wish were different, or the challenges we face.

Choosing gratitude helps shift that perspective.

Gratitude is more than simply saying “thank you.” It is recognizing the value others bring into our lives, appreciating acts of kindness, celebrating differences, and understanding that even small gestures can have a meaningful impact.

Practicing gratitude can help students develop empathy, build resilience, strengthen relationships, and contribute to a more positive school environment.

Just as our cultural traditions connect us to the generations before us, gratitude helps us recognize the people who continue to support, encourage, and shape our lives today.

Building Connections Before Thanksgiving Break

As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to make the weeks leading up to our weeklong school break meaningful and relationship-centered.

Throughout November, students are encouraged to reflect on the individuals who have made a difference in their lives, whether that is a family member, teacher, coach, classmate, friend, or community member.

Sometimes, the most meaningful expressions of gratitude are the simplest: offering encouragement, showing respect, including someone who feels left out, or taking a moment to recognize another person's efforts.

These everyday choices help create a school culture where students feel supported, appreciated, and valued.

Our hope is that students carry these lessons beyond the classroom and into their homes, friendships, and communities.

Rooted in Identity. Strengthened by Gratitude.

At Stilwell Middle School, we believe that understanding who we are begins with recognizing the people, traditions, and experiences that have shaped us.

Native American Heritage Month reminds us of the importance of honoring our history, preserving cultural traditions, and celebrating the identities that make our community unique.

Our ribbon-inspired banner represents more than a celebration of heritage. It serves as a reminder that our roots give us a foundation, our experiences help shape our identity, and our choices determine how we grow.

As we embrace “Choosing Gratitude,” we encourage students to recognize the good around them, appreciate the contributions of others, and understand that a strong school community begins with how we treat one another.

“Gratitude changes how we see the world. When we appreciate one another, we strengthen our relationships and build a school where everyone feels valued.”

This November, we celebrate our heritage, honor our traditions, and choose gratitude for the people and experiences that make our school community stronger.

Rooted in Identity. Choosing Gratitude. Rooted in Purpose.

Our Roots. Our Purpose. Our Future.

It's a Great Day to Be an Indian!
